the new zealand Golden lamb awards - "the glammies"
Ex-All Black joins the team
Former All Black Richard Loe rounds off the all-star team set to judge this year’s Meat & Wool New Zealand Golden Lamb Awards (aka the Glammies).
Loe will put his palate to the test alongside the Topp Twins and distinguished chefs, Michael Coughlin and Graham Hawkes.
With entries closing at 5pm on Friday 29 January, the race is on for farmers and butchers to get their applications in.
Meat & Wool New Zealand Chief Executive, Dr Scott Champion, says the Glammies competition continues to have significant relevance for the industry because it celebrates excellence in lamb production and quality.
“The Glammies showcases the best of our lamb, providing a platform for farmers to display the highest possible standard and quality,” says Champion.
The fourth annual Glammies, supported by Pfizer Animal Genetics, is set to see some fierce competition.
After rigorous testing at Carne Technologies for tenderness and yield, the finalists will face the ultimate taste test at the Upper Clutha A & P Show in Wanaka on March 12.
With $2,000 up for grabs, along with the bragging rights of holding the Meat & Wool New Zealand Grand Champion Trophy, there is a lot at stake for competitors.
A retail section runs alongside the farmer competition for butchers to put their product to the test. They also get a chance to win the Glammies Meat Retailer Trophy.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION
The Golden Lamb Awards (Glammies) competition aims to find the highest yielding, most tender, tastiest lamb in New Zealand. It is open to sheep farmers from around the country with a retailer section to be introduced for the 2009 challenge.
The Glammies has been running for two years. The idea originated from the success of Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s beef competition, Steak of Origin. It was timely to have the equivalent for the lamb industry.
The competition process involves an initial assessment of a lamb leg at Lincoln University. Each leg is tested for yield (CT scanner), tenderness (kilograms shearforce) and colour. This selects the finalists to be cooked and tasted. The finalist lamb (four from each of the four classes) is tasted at the Upper Clutha A & P show in Wanaka 13-14 March, 2009 by top chefs and celebrities to find the best lamb. The competition costs $50 incl GST per entry. See entry form for conditions of entry.
The four classes are:
- CLASS 1: Best of Breed – Dual Purpose
- CLASS 2: Best of Breed – Dual Purpose X Terminal
- CLASS 3: Best of Breed – Composite/Crossbreed X Terminal
- CLASS 4: Best of Breed – Terminal
In addition:
- Best of Brand – Retailers
