The Golden Lamb Awards, aka Glammies

About the Competition

The Golden Lamb Awards (aka The Glammies) competition aims to find the highest yielding, most tender and tasty lamb in New Zealand.  It is open to sheep farmers and retailers from around the country.

The Glammies has been running since 2007.  The idea originated from the success of Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s beef competition, Steak of Origin. It was therefore timely to have the equivalent for the lamb industry.

The competition process involves an initial assessment of a lamb leg at Carne Technology in Cambridge.  Each leg is tested for yield (CT scanner), tenderness (kilograms shearforce), succulence and colour.  This process selects the finalists (top four from each of the five classes). These are then tasted at the Upper Clutha A & P show in Wanaka in March, by top chefs and celebrities to find the Grand Champion.

The four classes are:

  • CLASS 1: Best of Breed – Traditional
  • CLASS 2: Best of Breed – Crossbreed
  • CLASS 3: Best of Breed – Terminal Cross
  • CLASS 4: Best of Breed – Open

In addition:

  • CLASS 5: Retailer

The processor of the winning farmer entrant also receives a prize
