about the quality mark

The New Zealand Beef and Lamb Quality Mark represents a set of standards designed to improve and maintain quality.

It was launched to the consumer on 29 September 1997.

Meat and Wool New Zealand is the owner of the Quality Mark and Beef + Lamb New Zealand is responsible for implementing the programme. The Quality Mark standards have been set by representatives of the meat industry at all levels through to retail. The Quality Mark label appears only on meat which has achieved these standards, and the label assures customers that the beef and lamb they purchase is of a consistently high standard.

Beef and Lamb carrying the Quality Mark must firstly be grown and processed in New Zealand.

How do I Choose the Best Quality Beef and Lamb?

By the New Zealand Beef and Lamb Quality Mark. The Quality Mark is a red, black and gold rosette that features on beef and lamb which has met the highest quality standards. By choosing beef and lamb displaying the Quality Mark, you are assured that standards have been met including leanness, tenderness and food safety requirements. Selected Quality Mark cuts carry the Heart Foundation Tick, which means these beef and lamb cuts with the Tick have met the Tick criteria of 4g or less saturated fat per 100g, with minimum internal and external fat (no more than 5mm of external fat).
