MOVEMENT MEETS COMMUNITY AT WORLD IRON AWARENESS WEEK 2025

Beef + Lamb New Zealand Inc once again facilitated World Iron Awareness Week (WIAW), held this year from 13–18 October, continuing to champion the Iron to Move theme. The focus for 2025 was on the essential role iron plays in carrying oxygen to our muscles – supporting everything from high-energy exercise to simply getting through a busy day.

To bring the theme to life, Beef + Lamb New Zealand teamed up with parkrun at Cornwall Park on Saturday 18 October. More than 500 runners took part in the morning 5km (an impressive lift from the usual 300).

After the run, participants and their families enjoyed live music, games and a few giveaways, including a custom tote bag with iron resources, a recipe card and a dried meat snack provided by Mīti. Hot beef burgers fresh off the barbecue were also on offer and proved very popular.

Beef + Lamb Ambassador and rugby superstar Stacey Waaka played a key role throughout the event, helping drive attendance and sparking meaningful conversations about the importance of iron for everyday wellbeing. Her presence helped connect the theme to the realities of staying active, healthy and fuelled.

Julia Sekula, Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Head of Nutrition, reinforced that message, highlighting why iron remains a vital nutrient for Kiwis of all ages:

“Iron plays an important role in delivering oxygen to our muscles, which is especially important for anyone who’s active. When iron stores run low, it can leave you feeling tired, weak, and short of breath, all of which can affect daily life.”

“Our bodies aren’t able to produce iron, so it must come from the foods we eat. Including iron-rich foods like beef and lamb is an effective way to support your iron levels, particularly for busy, active families.”

For those who may be unsure about their iron status, Julia added:

“If you’re experiencing fatigue or other symptoms, a blood test through your GP can help identify if iron levels are low, allowing you to make dietary adjustments as needed.”

Looking Ahead

Beef + Lamb New Zealand is excited to work with parkrun in 2026, and is exploring opportunities to potentially expand the partnership and build on this year’s momentum during next year’s World Iron Awareness Week, running 12–18 October.
