Afghan Women Community Day at Homeland

Beef + Lamb New Zealand loved being part of the New Settlers Family & Community Trust (NFACT), Afghan Women Community Day at Homeland. Cooking and sharing food is important for Afghan people – who are renowned for their hospitality – and to see these wonderful ladies, who now call Aotearoa home, teach Peter a thing or two was so much fun.

These amazing wāhine collectively cooked and shared the most amazing Afghan feast of Ashak - dumplings served with a rich beef sauce, chana dahl and yogurt. This was served with Borani Banjan, a delicious eggplant dish. If it’s possible to taste love in a dish, this meal was brimming with it. A sweet finish to the meal was Peter’s mum’s recipe for pavlova – Timmy’s Pavlova - which was the first time most of the ladies had ever baked this Kiwi classic. Peter described the day with the Afghan Women’s group as “inspiring, joyous, knowledgeable and delicious”.

Fahima Saeid, CEO of NFACT shared “The ladies felt immediately welcomed and Homeland quickly felt like their homeland - they had a fabulous time. I am sure the memories will stay with us all for many years to come.”
